The Queen of the Snow World by Tzoli The Queen of the Snow World by Tzoli
The Mighty Transarctica travelling on the snow and ice covered Earth. An Earth which is entirely hidden under an opaque layer of clouds and not seen the Sun for hundreds of years! Moving on the rails from town to town to make trade and a living, and to find and info on an ancient project codenamed "Sun"

It's the Intro screen from one of my favourite games and I decided it needed a better high resolution drawing so I made one!

Used Tools: Paint Tool SAI and Wacom Bamboo Tablet. Recolored for the colouring

It would be great. The game is still really fun, and atmosphere is really great, but there are some problems with game mechanics, especially with fighting other trains (but given when it was made it is pretty good game for it's time).

I haven't been logged into deviantart for several years! I did it just to send you some props for what you have done! We must be in similar age. I am very nostalgic about Transarctica - and its intro music which is so touchy.

For Transarctica I once had a Brain surge and thought about the locomotive itself, and written down here my thoughts:

What is your opinion?

you do make some good points but I think the original creators didn't understand trains all that well the red dots are probably just make it look intimidating or a forward port hole for observation like how american rotary snow plows have. the extra funnels or chimneys or "stacks" in america I'm not sure really why but it may be special pipe for the relief valves. Also I know that some locomotives use oil instead of coal for fuel, but here they use coal. the wheel arrangement brings to me back to what I said, the creators probably didn't know exactly how to make locomotives, and probably thought no one really cares, but I'm not sure exactly. so for this beast in sketchup should it be standard gauge or broad gauge? standard is 4 feet 8.5 inches. broad gauge would be able to support a large locomotive. my guess that thing weighs over 600 tons.

Neither standard nor board gauge!
I've calculated with my friend that the gauge is around 3-4 meters (3 is my choice), close the German Super train proposal.
You can see the discussion here:
forums.sunlightsystems.de/view…
The German proposal:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breitspu…

The locomotive as I've stated quite many times weights 1000tons.
The Wheel arrangement is one of the weirdest things as the artworks have this few while ingame in the battle screen it have many more:
tzoli.deviantart.com/art/Locom…
The story of the game based on the French Visual Novel: The Ice Company (Le Compagnie des Glaces) while the creators themselves told they based the locomotive from the Heavy Metal Hero Cover by Rodney Matthews:
i.imgur.com/KyX9W.jpg
(Hence the large size, and many funnels I assume)
Which looks like are either 4-14-8 or 0-18-8

And to help with the rail gauge (I've been told trains usually twice as wide as the rail's gauge) here are some screen from the insides of the wagons (I've been re-drawn them but they are close to the originals)
tzoli.deviantart.com/art/The-B…
tzoli.deviantart.com/art/Capta…
tzoli.deviantart.com/art/The-H…
The insides of the wagons looks like 6-7-8meters wide.

Well 3 meters is approximately 9 feet so that would be considered broad gauge, or in this case super broad gauge.

That 9 feet is actually closer to 10 then 9. but it's between 3 and 5 meters. Try using the thread the pictures as a base

Yep, and it's an 1000Ton Locomotive, but look at the sizes of the wheels!

since its probably standard rail gauge (4' 8 1/2") I'd think about 72" diameter wheel

Err in metric that is errr... 72 inch is around 1.8 meter right? So no.
Look at the door and compare it the the wheels! The "small" leading wheels are around 2-2.5 meters while the BIG wheels are around 5-6 meters!!!
If not such large wheels then 10 would be not enough to hold 1 kiloton of steel!

Yep the 4-8-8-4 and that is the Locomotive and the Tender, but the Transarctica Locomotive itself weights 1000 tons :D

Also as a side note this locomotive have a different wheel arrangement ingame. While the Intro have 4-4-2-0 ingame 4-6-4-4-4-0

Thank you for your submission into :iconzealzone:
I will be your art critic today.

Pros:
:bulletblack: For starts you are improving greatly :) well done. I really appreciate the detail especially around the wheels.
:bulletblack: I also really love the style you have used on the mountains in the background :) Looks very refreshing and clean.

Cons:
:bulletblack: The one thing that really sticks out is the sky in the background. It looks way too plain, maybe using a simple cloud brush just to add some simple textures would really help :)
:bulletblack: Although you did a great job I think the metallic surface of the train needs a bit of work. Try practising some metals, yes they are difficult but it is need of some reflections.

Great job though :)
I hope the critique helped and if you are in need of any more feedback you can resubmit into #ZealZone or contact me directly ~DarkSteeI

Thanks! Well to tell you the trouth I used this as a basis:
[link]
But even that I think I made a nice job considering the original was an enlarged picture whose resolution was 640x480. My idea was to create a much higher resolution and more clean/accurate version of the original. It was like reworking an old small picture to a modern one :)

For the sky: In the game the Earth was covered fully in snow and ice (due to a fully cloud layer) and I don't know if this picture showing the clouds or the clean sky
Metal: I'm not sure what you meant by that.
