Anti-Aircraft Cruiser-Battleship USS Kentucky by Tzoli Anti-Aircraft Cruiser-Battleship USS Kentucky by Tzoli
This is a drawing for a friend of mine who is very knowledgable and very likes the USN warships.

Soon after the war a multitude of programs, ideas and plans were drawn up to how to finish the last two battleships of the Iowa class: the USS Illinois and the USS Kentucky of out of which Kentucky was in a more advanced state of construction. In 1945/46 Admiral King and Admiral Chester Nimitz proposed a modification for the Illinois improving it's AA capabilities by redesigning the placements of her 5"/38, 40mm and 20mm AA guns:

i.imgur.com/nJaH67A.png

Later in 1948 plans were drawn up to convert the Kentucky into an Anti-Aircraft Battleship with large amounts of 5"/54 and 3"/70 AA guns with the replacement of the 16" gun turrets with 2, 3 or 4 quadruple 8" RF gun turrets the same guns used on the Des Moines class heavy cruisers, essentially turning the ship into a battleship sized and armoured but cruiser armed vessel: Not heavy cruiser, not battleship and nether battlecruiser! Because of this I choose to name cruiser-Battleship the early designation of the Battlecruiser and similar armed designs of battleship size but armoured cruiser weaponry.
The design became lighter than the original Iowa class battleships but that much lighter because part of the saved tonnage used for thickening the deck armour and the large number of gun turrets and their barbettes too were added quite the extra weight.
By the documents system at least 8 projects (Schemes A through H) were proposed but drawings and data are only available about the last 3 with two, three and four quad turrets and a varying amount of 5"/54 and 3"/70 AA guns.
I've chosen the 3 turreted Scheme G.

The design had the following characteristics:
Dimensions: 262,1 (wl) 270,4 (oa) x 33 x 10,6m
Displacement: 45.000tons (standard), 52.000tons (full load)
Armour: 208mm Deck, 310mm Belt
Engines: 212.000shp, 4 shafts
Speed: 60km/h (32,5knots)
Range: 27.800km at 28km/h (15.000nm at 15knots)
Armaments:
3x4 203mm/55 RF Mark 16 Guns,
16x2 127mm/54
Mark 16 Guns DP-AA Guns,
6x2 76mm/70 Mark 23 AA Guns

Hm! Very interesting!

P.S. Coinsidentaly, the "Zeus" anti-aircraft fin-stabilized beam-riding shell was under development in roughly the same time period... late 1940s. Maybe this design were supposed to make use of those shells?

"However the drawings style and the hand written text in the lower right corner indicates this is an official “Spring Style”. Scheme “F” is the two quad turret varian, “G” is with three and “H” with four such mounts".

What does "spring style" mean?

It's a set of documents. They show the various design studies the General Board ordered, most of the works can be found here, but there are missing books and missing documents:

Cool, but chances are this desing would have probably be decommisioned along side most heavy cruisers in the beggining of the sixties.

1956 proposal: 2x1 Polaris Launchers (16 missiles altogether horizontally stored)
4x2 Talos Launchers (80 missiles each, 320 altogether)
12x1 Tartar Launchers (42 missiles each 504 altogether)

Considered unrealistic because the 20x director radars would interfere with each other so launchers reduced to 2 Talos and 4 Tartar

Besides the eight projects you are talking about to take advantage of the two helmets of the last battleships of the Iowa class (Designs A - H), there were more projects to use the quadruple towers of 203 mm 8 inches?  Thanks.

Now I wonder, what use would it have? Escort of aircraft carrier? Coastal bombing? I can not imagine the price of that ship, but I suppose that two or three antiaircraft cruisers could be built with the price of this ship ... It's an incredible design. A kind of "missing link" between a battleship and a cruiser ...

Experience of the Kamikaze attacks in the late stages of WW2 the advent of fast jet aircraft and cruise missiles, where the smaller calibre 40mm and 20mm and the older 5"/38 could barely or not cope with these targets, saturation of an area with this much modern guns guarantee the destruction of hostile enemy targets.

Your missing link is the Armoured Cruiser and the Battlecruiser.

Magnificent. Really impressive. I had never seen anything like it. The displacement is of battleship, the hull is of battleship, but the appearance is that of a gigantic cruiser. The armament is that of a huge cruise, but a cruise. I can think of a hundred comments, but I will reflect on them. Thanks for your contributions and for your illustrations. It is a magnificent work.

If the 8-inch battery has sufficient elevation for AA use it would be deadly, otherwise might these carry the twin 6-inch DP gun installed on CLAA Worcester?

Very unique design, but I haven't understand if the quadruple 8in is a dual purpose or a standard cruiser gun. By the way, these are the same developed for Des Moines?

Well the US wanted shore bombardement alright. Im guessing that and AA escort duties were intended.

I still think just running 16" or even 12/14" would have been far better for most roles the US wanted such ships to fill. Slapping this many CA guns on Iowa hull seems interesting, but only screams naval architects wet dream haha.

Despite that though, looking forward to seeing this finished ;)

I mean uploading ur drawing to the post of the tree as an alternative to another ship. As always, the credit god to you! For example:

Here I use the B65 class (drawing by Tzoli) which.....etc etc

An I forgot; tell me when I can send you the next ships for the drawings; there is no hurry tho, I think I can use text to “picture” the ones needed.

I think it's an imaginary design based on the premiliminar designs of the Montana class, but I've never seen anything like it before. It looks like an antiaircraft battleship, but you have to know what the main armament is and if they have antiaircraft capability. I lean over 305-millimeter (12-inch) cannons. If that version has antiaircraft capability then it is clear that this vessel was meant to protect aircraft carriers and coastal bombing, but I do not know what use an anti-aircraft battleship would have in place of lighter antiaircraft cruisers. In any case, excited to see it finished.
