Not necessarly, though enough torpedoes would cripple her. Yamato was sunk because of a design fault: The secondary guns are taken from the Mogamis, and thus having minimal armour. now add heavy dive bombing and minimal armoured turrets....

I'm saying that, by WWII aircraft were now the dominant force, and any large battleship would just be a huge waste of material and a massive target. The Japanese should've built more carriers instead.

They had enough carriers, just they lose pilots faster then they could replace

In terms of numbers of carriers in service throughout the war (excluding escort carriers); the Imperial Navy possessed a total of 19 carriers, while the US Navy possessed 31 carriers. In fact if you just consider the Essex class alone (24 ships), the US Navy far surpassed the IJN in terms of carriers. So my point stands, the IJN would have been better off building more carriers than battleships.

It is always easier to see such things in a later perspective, but at that time Japan had hardly known the full carrier capacity of the USN same way the US did not know the true potential and size of the Yamatos, hell they even thought Japan building 2 large cruisers or smaller battlecruisers of around 20-25.000 tons (The Chichibu ships)

But what I'm saying, is that the Japanese should have realised that the age of the battleship was over, and that carriers (and naval aircraft) were now the dominant force in naval warfare. The US realised this very quickly, and I am surprised the Japanese didn't do the same.

Are you sure? The South Dakotas and Iowas were finished by mid war, North Carolinas were finished early war, and the Alaskas were Late war. Montana was cancelled only in mid war.

MONSTRUOUS!!!
I heard once of the project of an american battleship with the same main gun layout, but even bigger (22 inch/560mm cal.)
Secondaries would have been 18x8 inch in triple turrets (taken from Baltimore class cruisers), and 44x5 inch DP in dual turrets. Maximum armor would have been 38 inches.
Would also have been enormous, 1414 ft long, 289 ft wide, and 227000 tons of displacement.
And above all that, is was nuclear powered, with more than 550000 SHP on SIX propellers!!!
Ultimate Montana (possibly called USS ARIZONA)
IN-FREAKING-SANE!!!

That is surely a non real one like this too!

Last US Battleship is the Montana class. Still the largest gun armed US BB design proposal is a Slow Iowa but with 3x3 18inch guns!

Design for slow battleship April 1938 (I)

Displ. 45,495 standard and 56,595 full load

Speed: 27.5 knts

Armament: 9*18"/48 (Presumably the Mark I weapon); 20*5"/38; 3*quad 1.1; 12*0.5 cal

Armor details:
Belt 14.75" at 19 deg slope
Main AD: 5.1"
Bomb deck: 60 pounds
Splinter deck: 25 pounds
Barbettes, CT: 21"
Turret face: 20"
Turret roof/CT roof: 10"

Yeah, was totally fictional.
This nuclear monster was (in alternate universe)developed in late cold war, to outgun a (fictional, as well)soviet mega-BB called "Georgij Zhukov" which was slightly smaller and had 18x22" guns in six triple turrets, all superfiring (like your alternative Ise class)
The new USS Arizona looked like a fusion between a Yamato class BB and an Arleigh Bourke class DDG, having a "swying" deck, with the bow lower than the stern, and "stealth" superstructures in AB style.
It also had four rudders, in order to have a turning radius smaller than the state she war named after

Hmm, Interesting, can you give me a link to the drawing of this ship?

Also I assume you heard of the German H series of battleships with the H-44 the last official proposal for a German battleship featuring 4x2 20inch cannons. And there is one semi official design the last dream of Hitler's Kriegsmarine the H-45 with 4x2 80cm Dora Heavy Artillery Guns!!

Oh and the japanese too dreamt big, Commander (Or captain??) Kanneda's proposal for a half Megaton (YES 500.000 TON) Battleship with 100 406mm Cannons in 50 twin turrets!!!
